4-H History 101 Did you know....
The first emblem was a 3 leaf clover developed in 1907-08 by O.H. Benson.
The 3 H's represented Head, Heart & Hands. The 4th H was added in 1911 but
initially was called "HUSTLE" but was later changed to Health.
In 1909 - O.B. Martin, former director of Texas Agricultural Extension Service,
was appointed to direct the boys and girls club work on a national basis.
In 1912 - Edna Trigg was appointed Milam County Home Demonstration Agent -
the first such appointment in Texas - to organize girls clubs, then called
"Tomato Clubs".
By 1912, 73,000 boys & 23,000 girls were enrolled in club work.
Participants urged
the development of a uniform reporting form to show what each member was
learning
and doing. This consistent reporting method provided a common base for
club work
across the country. This was the birth of record books!
